I already sent a letter previously objecting to local plans to build on Green Belt in the Local Plan.
Since then the World has become aware the most frightening problem facing not only us in our corner of Hertfordshire but the entire Earth is climate change.
I see in the amended consultation plans North Herts Council notes shopping habits are changing, which may affect the planned extension of retail buildings in major town centres in their area. This change in shopping habits is nothing compared to the changes people who care are noting in our climate.
Our central government has not grasped the changes necessary to halt the warming effect of carbon emissions by the population. Therefore there is no pressure on local politicians to follow legal requirements and make the first principle of planning, will it harm or help Planet Earth?
Agricultural land is vital for growing our foods, the most precious possession for a population. Who knows if drought will affect these eastern regions, or worsen in parts of Southern Europe making it even more vital we can provide for other people.
Water is difficult to store in parts of England, we are dependant on aquifers, will that water be able to provide for even more people moving in the area, taking into account the wider population i.e. Cambridge with the huge explosion in building there. Where does their water come from? Our part of England has low rainfall at times.
Expanding local villages just puts more traffic on the roads, increases carbon & pollutants as people drive for jobs, schools and shopping. Bus services are a disgrace outside London. Train Companies have only recently provided more capacity, how long before that becomes obsolete if huge estates are built over the fields of Baldock and Stevenage for example.
Land unsuitable for growing food should be replanted with trees. Our Ash trees locally are already suffering from Ash Die Back, who will replant the thousands in Hertfordshire to replace the dead ones?
All our towns have empty shops, old hard to heat housing, shoddy blocks of flats etc all needing replacing with modern, insulated homes. People need to live in large and small towns, with good public transport, schools, amenities etc, not miles outside causing traffic congestion and pollution. Much new housing can be built by better use of the already built environment.
Our English countryside is the most precious possession of all the people. We deserve decent planning the keeps our air clean, gives us towns we all want to live in and saves our planet for all of us.
