KB1 Land at Deards End
Representation ID: 1770
Received: 30/11/2016
Respondent: Dr Alastair Moye
Legally compliant? No
Sound? No
Duty to co-operate? No
Objection to KB1:
It is very bad for human health to live close to a major road, especially downwind. There will be illnesses and premature deaths from the air pollution caused by vehicle emissions.
Deards End Lane, and the railway bridge, will not cope with the additional traffic.
- Traffic impact on Deards Lane Conservation Area
- Deards Lane will become a rat-run - no footpath - safety impacts
- KB1 should be abandoned, or it should consist of far fewer dwellings, set back at least 100 metres from the edge of the motorway.
As a doctor of medicine, I object to development KB1, because a large number of people will live very close to a busy motorway.
It is proven that poor air quality, from vehicle emissions, increases the risk of death from asthma and other respiratory conditions, sudden cardiac death, and overall mortality.

We should not build high-density housing next to a motorway, which is about to be expanded to three lanes.
The additional traffic will also spoil the Deards End Lane conservation area; Deards End Lane will be turned into a busy rat-run, with traffic queueing to pass in each direction. There is no footpath; pedestrian casualties are inevitable.

KB2 Land off Gypsy Lane
Representation ID: 1774
Received: 30/11/2016
Respondent: Dr Alastair Moye
Legally compliant? No
Sound? No
Duty to co-operate? No
Objection to KB2 on the grounds of:
- air quality impacts on health and life expectancy- objection to new houses and primary school so close to a major road
- development not sustainable: traffic, railway bridges, drainage, sewage, noise pollution
- development should be much smaller, and there should be a buffer strip of at least 100 metres between the motorway and the nearest new houses.
As a doctor, I strongly object to the siting of so many new houses and a primary school on a site so close to a major road. The air quality will be poor, particularly when the wind is in the west, and on still days. Particulates and oxides of nitrogen cause excess cardiac and respiratory mortality; we know that people living close to major roads have reduced life expectancy, as a direct function of their proximity to the road.
I also don't believe that the development is sustainable, on grounds of additional traffic, railway bridges, drainage, sewage, and noise pollution.

I would rather that this central space was used for a new public house or restaurant, but I don't object to redevelopment of the site.

KB4 Land east of Knebworth
Representation ID: 1780
Received: 30/11/2016
Respondent: Dr Alastair Moye
Objection to KB4:
- most appropriate site is land o the south-east of the village - could have a direct road connection into London Road and would not put traffic over or under the railway bridges
- area to the north of Watton Road should be preserved - prevents coalescence
I have always thought that the most appropriate site for housing development in Knebworth is land to the south-east of the village, which can have a direct road connection onto London Road.
Such access would not put additional traffic over or under the three railway bridges, which could not accommodate the increased traffic (particularly the additional journeys to the proposed new primary school).
I would object, however, to more houses to the NORTH of Watton Road (east of the recreation ground); this area must be preserved, to avoid the coalescence of Knebworth with Stevenage.
