Barkway and Nuthampstead Neighbourhood Plan 2018 - 2031

Representation ID: 10483

Received: 07/06/2024

Respondent: North East Herts Swift Group Gavin Vicary

Representation Summary:

Please implement policy requiring swift bricks in all new buildings and developments

Full text:

We are hoping to try and influence biodiversity policy by requiring swift bricks and bat bricks on all new developments in Barkway and Nuthampstead

Swifts are red listed birds that have declined by more than half in the last twenty years. Swift bricks are a really valuable conservation tool that should be used in new housing to help reverse their decline.

Swift bricks last the lifetime of the building and are inconspicuous, simple and inexpensive to install and do not require ongoing maintenance. Swifts are relatively clean birds that take their mess away from the nest and their presence is likely to go largely unnoticed by residents.
